Statement:
The subject of my art is shadows. The beginning and the end of shadows are the space between light and darkness, a space that can be infinitely reduced and infinitely increased. Shadows are the means by which the body shows its form. The form of the body cannot be understood in detail but through shadows.
My choice of theme comes from an intuitive place. I look for the unknown, I look for the light in the shadows. I am eager to participate in the story unfolding around me; these stories are not obvious at first, and the commonalities between them are anything but common. I use slow shutter speeds and double exposures to explore the nuances of movement and the temporal modulation of time from the past to the present to the future.
Recently, I began to study landscape. I try to capture abstract and evocative
landscapes to produce an imaginary space, a visual reminder that what I create through the viewfinder is only real to me. I use the ever-changing light to evoke the mood of my dreams and am inspired by the interplay of light and darkness.
I love nature, and I'm interested in textures and shapes and how the movement of light and shadow on an object can create new objects. I use my Canon camera and my cell phone to shoot my photographs. Highlights and shadows from my phone and camera often bring out the elements of the photo that interest me most. Light and shadow are the most fascinating visual elements to me. Even if the day is overcast or dark, I will shoot. When the sun is low and the shadows are long and clear, I am happiest. My intention in creating Light and Shadow was to show the relationship between darkness and light. I want to show how dark and
light coexist in our lives and work together to create something beautiful. All the darkness and pain of our life works to enhance the light. Its purpose is to expand our happy time. Without pain, we would never feel or know freedom. We can go through life avoiding pain, only to find ourselves exhausted, stressed and scared. Or we can embrace the shadow in order to enhance the light.
In life there are few things that will never abandon you, shadows being one of them. Incredible images emerge when shadows are allowed to take on a life of their own. As long as the light is well controlled and the shadows are taken together to add some material to the overall picture, the addition of shadows will not only make the picture more profound, but also give it a mysterious feeling.
