Statement:
Sometimes, I'd like for you to be just as confused as I am. Life can reveal as much as it conceals. We are introduced to this production we call life and are given a script to read. Most read it and don’t question it. The poets read between the lines and reveal the answers. The artists switch and twist and abstract the script, then bring it back into reality. Artists go against the norms and redefine the lines.
This body of work, Eye Begin, started when I decided to leave my medical studies for art. I thought it was too late to begin something new but realized it’s never too late for anything. The series began with the work, The Choice is Yours, which symbolizes freedom and motion. It shows two highways with eyes as road markings. All eyes are watching, but not all are seeing. There may be dead ends, but down the stairs or through a door these roads find their way back together.
I'm constantly exploring new mediums. Currently I use three: watercolor, oil paint, and spray paint. Watercolor was the first medium I learned to paint with. It has shaped the approach and techniques I use with all my mediums today. Traditional watercolor paintings use no white paint, so you must plan the highlights, carefully painting around each one. Even with oil, I still allow the white of my surface to show through.
We were not meant to have one pursuit in life, as there is much to discover. I want to challenge the notion of sight and seeing. Is what's in front of us our only reality, or does it go deeper? I use eyes, doors, and stairs in my work to express sight and mystery. The mystery of what’s on the other side of the door. The intuition to act on the impulse to see it. I use eyes to catch my viewer’s attention.
My work is as calm as the sky and intense as flames. Blue and red are the twin flames of life; they are two of the most striking colors to me. They are a challenge to work with. If they touch one another, they turn into dark purple. When used properly, they can cause a vibrancy like no other. Like the twin flames, we should always be familiar with both entities.
